Gyokko Ryū I
Kihon Happō & Ten Ryaku
Takamatsu Sensei said that the “Kihon Happō is the root of Budō.” Even if they belong to the Gyokko Ryū, Hatsumi Sensei wrote that “they exist dormant within all nine schools that I inherited from Takamatsu Sensei” (Unarmed Fighting Techniques of the Samurai).
This is how this Ryū is important to Japanese Budō. The style arrived from China to Japan during the 9th century but was formalized during the 12th century at the end of the Heian period.
The Gyokko Ryū is composed of three levels and is introduced by the Kihon Happō and closed by the Sanshin no Kata. The system deals with short distances and a large use of the backbone as a pivot (Kosshi). This part contains the Kihon Happō & Ten Ryaku no Maki.
